Correction
There was an error in a story published in last week’s South Reporter (May 3 edition) with the headline, “County welcomes Minority Caucus.”
Holly Springs Mayor Kelvin Buck was the keynote speaker for the meeting of the Mississippi Association of Supervisors Minority Caucus, and he was misquoted in the story.
In his speech, Buck was quoted as saying, “It is an absolute necessity to raise taxes.”
In his clarification submitted to the newspaper, Buck said, “What I actually said was taxes are a necessity. In other words, whether we like them or not, in order to provide all the things and services constituents want, government has to have taxes. The only source for the funds needed for safety, roads, schools, firefighters is to raise revenue through taxes.”
Mayor Buck said he was not in any way advocating raising the tax rate.
“I was only saying taxes have to be collected,” he said.
“No increase in rate and no increase in mills – unless absolutely necessary.”
The South Reporter is glad to set the record straight.
