Byhalia wins on buzzer-beater

It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but it was still a win – and at the buzzer on a big stage.

The Byhalia Lady Indians knocked off Lanier 28-27 Thursday afternoon at Jackson State University to advance to the Class 4A state semi-finals.

“It was slow-paced and a grind,” coach James Sales said about the one-point win last week. “We will take it.”

Tialexus Stevenson was the hero. She hit the game-winning shot just before the final horn sounded.

“A lot of fouls were being called; I knew we would have to put the ball on the floor and try to get something driving to the basket – draw a foul or get a lay-up,” Sales said the strategy off an in-bounds pass with six seconds remaining. “
