Surprise birthday party honors Eugene Smith

A surprise birthday party was thrown in honor of Eugene Smith Saturday night by his wife, Vivian Smith, in their home. Family and friends gathered to wish him well, enjoy good food and have a wonderful time. Happy Birthday to an amazing fella! Here’s to many, many more good years, Smitty!

Last week, the Marshall Academy varsity basketball teams traveled to Brookhaven to compete in the state AA tournament. Both teams tore it up on the court first and second rounds. Saturday brought about the championship games, both of which were played at Brookhaven Academy, who had the home court advantage.

The Lady Cougars struck first the entire first quarter. The Lady Patriots got some of their mojo back during the next three quarters, but it just was not meant to be for them. They placed second in the tournament, which advanced them to the overall tournament.

The Patriots came out strong, putting points on the board before the Cougars. It was a battle to the very end. The Patriots fell short, taking home the runner-up trophy. They, too, advanced to the overall tournament.

Both teams play this week in Clinton at Mississippi College. Whatever the outcome, it has been a tremendous season!
