Charlie Douglas of Flowood, stopped by Ole Miss Saturday and collected his son, Chandler, to come up and visit Leigh Douglas. They were her Saturday evening guests. They all enjoyed a fine dinner at Firebirds in Collierville, Tenn.
Congratulations to both of the Marshall Academy varsity basketball teams. They fought hard and both beat opponents by three in the championship games of the North AA tournament held in Benton over the weekend. They travel to Brookhaven this week for the State AA Tournament. Good luck to both teams!
Integrity means everything, I would venture to say even more so in organized sports. Showing sportsmanship will be remembered long after the scores are wiped clean from the board. Friday night, the varsity Patriots played Tri-County Academy. It was a great match-up for a hot minute until the Patriots just ran away with it. My son fouled a boy who was going up for a shot. While everyone was lining up on the free-throw line, he walked over, shook the boy’s hand and said, “I’m sorry; I should have let you have that.” That may not mean a lot to most people, but to me, it meant the world.
Saturday, we were in the same gym and got to watch Tri-County mix it up with Manchester. We were sitting on the same side as the Tri-County people. We all cheered (and loudly, I might add) for Tri-County. Not that we knew much about either school, just that our boys had played Tri-County the night before and they were good sports on the court. They have a tremendous player, Zack Willis, who just did not miss a three-point shot when given the opportunity. Being there, you would have thought he was one of our children the way we hollered for him. They wound up falling short in overtime to Manchester. Willis was named all-tournament, along with Wyle McMillen, Tyler Bolden, Eli Pearson and Everette Jones. When his name was announced, we all stood and clapped as he walked down. He even had pictures made with our boys. That is what it is all about, folks. Sportsmanship. Wins and losses come and go, but friendships formed on the court last forever.
