Marshall sweeps Winona Christian

Marshall Academy basketball teams started a new year with a pair of District 1AA road wins.

The Lady Patriots returned to the gym where they claimed last year's state championship and coasted past Winona Christian 57-24 Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Julia Nicholson scored eight of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter as coach Traci Rodgers' team took a 17-6 lead.

Marshall outscored the Lady Stars by the same margin, 17-6, in the second quarter to take a commanding 34-12 halftime advantage.

The Lady Patriots went on to win by 33 points.

Jessica Deming and Kaylan Parks added nine points each for MA and Alexis McGreger had eight. Eight of 10 Lady Patriots scored in the victory. The Marshall boys had a

much tighter contest on their hands. They escaped Winona Christian with a 55-51 win.

The Patriots fell behind 1613 after the opening period and were down 25-21 at the half. Tyler Bolden had 10 points for MA in the first half.

Following the intermission, coach Sam Pearson's squad rallied.

Eli Pearson hit three threes in the third, and Wyle McMillen added eight thirdquarter points as MA pulled ahead 38-37.

It stayed close in the fourth. Drayton Potts scored five in the fourth, including a three, and Pearson added four in the fourth as the Pats got the fourpoint victory.

Pearson finished with 16 points to lead Marshall. Bolden added 11 and McMillen 10.

The Lady Patriots (9-5 overall and 2-0 in the district) and Patriots (11-3 overall and 2-0 in the district) hosted Winona Christian Tuesday. They will visit non-district foe North Delta Thursday and then hit the road to face district opponent Carroll Academy Friday.

Next Monday, Jan. 22, Marshall teams host Class AAAA Magnolia Heights, and next Tuesday, Jan. 23, they will host district foe Central Holmes.
