Byhalia teams sweep Corinth
Byhalia teams took different paths to wins Friday night at home.
The Lady Indians grabbed control from the opening tip and dominated Corinth 49-26 to begin District 1-4A play.
The Byhalia girls stormed out front 13-2 after one quarter and led 25-10 at the half.
“The girls really played good basketball,” coach James Sales said. “We jumped on them early and played well.”
Tialexus Stevenson and Leekadra Smith led a balanced scoring attack with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Shaquira Caradine added nine.
The Byhalia boys let a double-digit lead slip from their grasps but still escaped with a 56-53 win over the Warriors.
“We were up 10 points with about 3:00 left but we let them come back and take the lead,” Sales said. “We had to battle in the last minute to get the win.”
Corinth had a chance to tie the game and send it to overtime with a few seconds left but missed the long-range shot.
“We’re still searching for the right combination,” Sales said. “We’re playing good at times and bad at times – like a roller coaster, up and down.”
The Indians led 34-26 at halftime.
Top scorer in the win was Kavonte Tunstall with 18. Corey Hardin was close behind with 16.
Byhalia-Southaven
A trip to Southaven on Tuesday night of last week was a rough one for the Byhalia squads.
The Lady Indians fell 49-31, their first loss of the season, while the Indians dropped a 72-54 decision.
The Byhalia girls fell behind 15-4 in the first.
“We came out flat,” said Sales, whose Lady Indians had beaten Southaven earlier in the season at home. “We had some good shots, but just missed lay-ups and everything.”
Shay Johnson had 13 points, nine assists and three steals in the loss.
Coach Sales said it was like his Byhalia boys “never got off the bus” in their 18-point loss to the Chargers.
“We were stagnant – slow,” he said. “It’s the ugliest game we’ve played since I’ve been here.”
Deandre Martin had 16 points. Antwon Porter had 13 points and eight rebounds. Hardin had nine points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Indians (8-1) and the Indians (5-4) hosted Olive Branch on Tuesday of this week. They will visit Senatobia Friday. Next Tuesday, Dec. 19, they host New Albany.
