Homeless shelter blessed, dedicated

The homeless shelter in Holly Springs was renamed Bishop Houck New Hope Village, Friday, Nov. 3, in a dedication and blessing ceremony.

The village, which was begun through efforts of the Catholics, had been closed down due to loss of funding. It is now reopened and houses 13 residents. A men’s unit is also opening for overnight stays.

Jeff Bell, director of the village, said there are 30 families on the waiting list and four more units are under renovation. The overnight mission-style dormitory will shelter men who can come in to bathe, wash clothes, and sleep.

“A lot of people just need a place to sleep,” Bell said.

Holly Springs Mayor Kelvin Buck said he is glad the city can partner with the Catholic Diocese of Jackson to provide the much-needed shelter for the homeless and he thanked them.
