City Personals
Last week, Kay and Laura Wheeler and I travelled to Ocean Springs for a few days. We visited with Lloyd Thompson and her family. Wednesday, we went to lunch at McElroy’s. Lisa Thompson, Janet Stennis and Alice Totten joined us, along with Lloyd. The food was superb, the staff friendly and the view was spectacular.
Thursday afternoon, we had lunch with Ann (Slayden) Pringle at Madison de lu in downtown Ocean Springs. They had a great variety of lunch items, as well as dessert.
We went to the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, as well as Realizations (a gift shop in the train stop primarily dedicated to Walter Anderson wares) and Shearwater Pottery. If you have never been to Shearwater, it is really an experience. Located right around the corner from the Ocean Springs harbor, it is nestled amongst large trees in a type of artists’ commune. After Hurricane Katrina took their shop, they rebuilt and it is simply stunning!
Having lived in Ocean Springs for years when I was younger, the gift shop to go to then was Salmagundi. They always had handmade tissue flowers they would put on the gifts they wrapped. Another gift shop moved into the prime location when Salmagundi’s closed after 50 years of business. It is called Poppy’s and is fantastic! The women who work there are so helpful and they carry everything from little pick-up gifts like dip mixes to beautiful Arthur Court pieces. It is definitely a “must stop” if you are on the coast!
Thursday night, we went to dinner at a local restaurant on the bayou, Mikey’s. Janet Stennis, her son, Coleman, and his girlfriend, Kendall, met us. That was the second night we had eaten there. Finding a local place off the beaten path is always a fun thing to do. Mikey’s has a laid-back atmosphere. You can eat inside or out over the water where we even saw an alligator lingering below. Their menu caters to everyone and their poboys are out of this world good!
The best part about the trip was getting to visit with friends and family. Seeing Alice, Ann, Janet and Aunt Lloyd after years was a real treat. Listening to Alice and Ann talk about the days growing up in Holly Springs was not only fascinating, but side splitting funny as well! Those ladies certainly are colorful and have the best memories to share!
Get well wishes to Mike Bagwell, who is convalescing at home under the care of his beautiful wife, Midge. Mike had a small fall which resulted in shoulder surgery last week.
Chandler Douglas, grandson of Leigh Douglas, is at Ole Miss this week. He is one of 100 incoming freshmen chosen to attend the Empower Leadership training program.
