Holly High sweeps Byers

Holly Springs played host to H.W. Byers Friday and swept the intra-county rival for the second time this season.

It was another great night for Lady Hawk Shretta Jeffries.

The junior scored 27 of her 30 points in the first half as the Holly High girls cruised past the Lady Lions 54-4.

The Lady Hawks opened the first by taking a 13-0 lead with 2:55 left on the clock. Samantha Johnson’s three-pointer further extended the lead. The Lady Lions remained scoreless as the first expired. It was 21-0.

The Lady Hawks had added 19 more points in the second frame. The Lady Lions were still scoreless at halftime (40-0).

In the third, the Lady Hawks’ scoring hit a snag. They produced a modest eight points. The Lady Lions got on the scoreboard with a free throw by Brianna Murphy. Byers was trailing 48-1 at the end of the third.

Both offenses also struggled in the fourth. Myesha Buffington sank a three to complete Byers’ scoring.

Hawks soars past Lions

The Holly High boys jumped out early and maintained a big lead throughout the game for the 63-36 win over the Lions.

The Hawks opened the nightcap by outscoring the Lions 10-0 within the first three minutes. DaQuan Smith hit back-to-back threes and a two-point bucket. Juwoyn Lyles poured in a deuce.

At the 4:51 mark, the Lions began to score. Michael Mabon made one of two attempts at the free-throw line for Byers. Then Kendrick Fountain went in for a lay-up to extend the lead to 12-1. Byers tried to narrow the gap but could only trim the margin down to nine. The Hawks were up 18-9 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

At the break, going to the locker room, the Hawks had pushed their lead to 35-20.

The Hawks began to toss in more points to stretch the margin in the third. They had added 22 more points compared to Byers’ nine. The Holly High boys held the big advantage, 57-29, at the end of the third frame.

The Hawks closed the nightcap with a 27-point win over their county rivals to the north.

Smith led the way for Holly High with 19 points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist. Lyles had 14 points and six rebounds. Fountain scored 12 points and added three rebounds and two steals.

For Byers, Kadamion Rhyan had 11.

Holly High teams will play Olive Branch Thursday night, Dec. 15, at home. The boys will play the host team in the Biggersville Christ­mas Classic Saturday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m.

The Lady Lions and Lions will travel to Ashland Friday night, Dec. 16, to play their rivals from the neighboring county.
