Tax collector praises certified workers

There was a time when tax collectors were trained in their individual county offices and there was no uniform formal training. But the Mississippi Legislature passed a law that they need to be trained, according to Betty Byrd, Marshall County tax collector.

The state said Marshall has to have at least three certified level I deputy tax collectors. But the county is going above and beyond the state requirements.

Byrd said the Marshall County Board of Supervisors has approved travel for her and nine deputies to obtain certification. There are three designations, Collector I, Collector II and Mississippi Collector of Revenue, the highest level attainable.

It takes three years to get to the highest level designation, Byrd said.
