Suspects arrested after shootout

A shootout just off the square in Holly Springs led to six arrests.

The incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. March 27 in the area of 145 North Memphis and carried over across the street to 130 North Memphis, according to police chief Grant Glover.

He said the first officer on the scene heard three gunshots as he got out of his patrol car.

“There was a large crowd of people, and he couldn’t get a visual on an active shooter,” Glover said. “Everyone was running around.”

He thanked the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department for quickly assisting the police department on the chaotic scene.

As the investigation started, Glover said police learned Larry Davis, 32, of the 1800 block of Perry Chapel Road, Ashland, had gone to the Holly Springs Fire Department near the scene of the shootout. Davis was shot in the leg area and transported to Methodist Olive Branch Hospital. After his release from the hospital, he was transported to the Benton County Jail and charged with aggravated assault, Glover said. His bond was initially set at $100,000 and later reduced to $20,000.

Other arrests followed in the early morning hours after the shooting.

Leshawn Strickland, 21, and Johnny Lee Strickland Jr., 26, both of the same Perry Chapel Road area, were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, Glover said.

Bond for each suspect was initially set at $100,000 and then reduced to $20,000.

Demarcus Williams, 29, of the 2300 block of Frazier Street, Rossville, Tenn., was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Glover said. Bond was set at $100,000 and reduced to $20,000.

Joyce Strickland, 51, of the 180 block of West Woodward Avenue, Holly Springs, was arrested and charged with tampering with physical evidence, Glover said. Her bond was set at $5,000.

He said those five suspects are family and friends, and were in a shootout with William Henley III, 32, of the 120 block of NW Boundary Street, Holly Springs. Henley was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to Glover. Bond was set at $100,000. He is in the Benton County Jail, with a hold by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

The shooting started on the east side of North Memphis Street after an argument erupted in a club, Glover said, and then carried over to the west side.

“We’re still investigating it,” he said. “If you have information, reach out to us (662-252-2122).

“Your information will be kept confidential.

“It was a dangerous situation. Luckily no one else was struck by gunfire.” All persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, the chief said.
