Supers discuss putting candidates on website

The Marshall County Board of Supervisors is considering putting the names of all candidates for county offices on the county’s website following a suggestion by District 5 supervisor Ronnie Joe Bennett.

He said newcomers to the county have said the counties where they had lived put the names of all candidates for office on their websites.

The suggestion followed a recommendation by circuit clerk Monet Autry that the website be updated to include new elected officials such as Amy Cole who is serving as District 3 election commissioner.

County board attorney Amanda Whaley Smith said she would pass along any changes requested to the company that administers the website.

“We have to tell them what we want changed,” Smith said. “We don’t have access.

Autry reminded the board that

Feb. 1 is the deadline for all candidates to qualify.

“I don’t use social media, because it would be a public record,” Autry said. “So, I am cautious of what we put out. What we put out they open it up to remarks. Input and all information has to be kept up.”

August 8 is the date of the first primary election.

Newly appointed chancery clerk Nicole Phelps wished the board a Happy New Year and launched into her first detailed report to the board.

Supervisors had to sign documents certifying they each had ridden all county roads in 2022. Phelps asked for postage for the county meter. The first quarter budget was approved.

All persons who have email access to the county computer service had to be reauthorized for email addresses.

The claims docket came to $308,314.

County administrator Tim Powell reported a claim for $11,025 as payment on the learning center.

He asked the board to pay his dues to the Mississippi Association of Supervisors.

Architectural fees of $44,330 and $2,600 were approved for Dean & Dean, for work on the new justice court complex and detention center.

The board approved placing seven sheriff’s department vehicles in the Jan. 14 auction at the Fairgrounds.

Leaks in the old jail were a concern for the Veteran Affairs officer Barbara Moore.

Terry said Moore has asked to work from home due to the mold.

Bennett said the jail had been checked for mold and found none.

Supervisors said they will look for another office space for Moore.
