Shootings under investigation
Three shootings over the weekend are under investigation by the Marshall County Sheriff’s office and the Violent Crimes Task Force, according to Sheriff Kenny Dickerson.
The first shooting took place Saturday, April 11, between 10:30 p.m. And 11 p.m. At a horse show in the Wall Hill area on private property, he said.
Deputies and medics responded to the location at Joe B’s and found the victim, Gary Poplar, mid-50s, from Michigan City, dead on the scene.
Dickerson said the investigation revealed that Poplar and another attendee at the show had a verbal altercation prior to the shooting.
Milton Lashon Burton, 52, of the 1000 block of Highway 309 South, Byhalia, turned himself in at the Marshall County Jail Sunday, a short time following the shooting, the sheriff said.
Burton has been charged with murder.
He was arraigned in justice court Monday and bonded out at $500,000.
The second shooting took place Sunday, April 12, around 11 a.m. In the 1100 block of Highway 311, Dickerson said.
The case, under investigation by the sheriff and members of the Marshall County Violent Crimes Task Force, including Police Chief Grant Glover, Assistant Police Chief Dwight Harris, and Investigator Anthony Jones, revealed that a vehicle stopped in front of the driveway to a mobile home and between 12 to 15 rounds were fired toward two people standing in front of the mobile home.
The victim, a 19-year-old, had wounds to his torso and was dead on the scene when investigators arrived, the sheriff said.
The vehicle driven by the suspects, a late model dark colored car, fled the scene following the barrage of gunfire, he said.
A second victim was taken to the Regional One Medical Center for treatment.
Dickerson said four persons of interest have been identified in the case.
Anyone who has information regarding this shooting is asked to call Marshall County Crime Stoppers at 855-743-4658 to leave tips. Callers do not have to identify themselves in order to leave tips, the sheriff said.
A third shooting at 1179 Red Banks Road, Saturday, April 11, around 11 p.m. Is under investigation, Dickerson said.
Two individuals at that location had a verbal altercation resulting in one individual shooting the other.
Deputies at the scene identified Justin Lee Spoon, 28, of the 1000 block of Red Banks Road as the suspect.
Spoon is charged with attempted murder.
Spoon was arraigned in justice court and bond was set at $250,000. He remained in jail on Tuesday.
