Runoff Nov. 28 for state senator

The State Senate, District 10, race will be decided in a runoff race November 28.

The top two vote-getters in the special election last week were Neil Whaley of Potts Camp and Sharon Gipson of Holly Springs.

District 10 covers most of Marshall County, except for Barton, Byhalia, Cayce, North Cayce, Victoria and the far northwest part of Red Banks. It includes all of Tate County.

Totals from Marshall and Tate counties combined showed Whaley with 2,243 votes and Gipson with 1,905.

Totals for the other candidates were Michael Cathey, 1,049; Ray Minor, 624; and Lennell Lucas, 448.

Gipson was the leading vote-getter in Marshall County and Whaley in Tate. In Marshall, Gipson had 1,771 votes and Whaley 1,013. In Tate, Whaley had 1,230 votes and Gipson 134.

Voter turnout was low. In Marshall County, the turnout was 23 percent, and in Tate, it was 15 percent.

The position in the Legislature came open when Bill Stone resigned as senator the last week of July to become the general manager of the Holly Springs Utility Department.

Contact the Marshall County circuit clerk’s office, 252-3434, concerning absentee voting. The circuit clerk’s office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The circuit clerk’s office will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, and Friday, Nov. 24.

However, it will be open Saturday, Nov. 25, from 8 a.m. to noon for absentee voting. The deadline to vote absentee in the circuit clerk’s office will be November 25 at 12 noon.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day November 28, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
