Relay for Life carries out mission

The Marshall County Relay for Life marked its 22nd year “Fighting for a Cure” on August 28 on the courthouse square.

Twenty teams raised funds this year. “Our mission matters more than ever,” said Linda Wilson, coordinator of the local Relay for Life event. “During this difficult time, cancer won’t stop, and neither will we.” She said the American Cancer Society could not do this without all the wonderful volunteers.

“We extend a special 'thank you’ to all the teams, committee members, participants, and sponsors for a job well done this year,” Wilson said. “We also wish to thank our mayor, Sharon Gipson, who was present to extend greetings.”

Teams compete each year to raise the most money. The winners for 2021 are as follows: first place, Bionic Believers (MTC) $9,268.13; second place, Mt. Pisgah CME Church $5,940; and third place, Zeta Upsilon Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. $3,939.

The Marshall County Relay for Life sponsors are — Wal-Mart (corporate sponsor), Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Omicron Alpha Omega Chapter of AKA, J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home, Marshall/Benton Rust and M.I. College Alumni Club, Bank of Holly Springs, Parker, Carlisle’s Cash Saver, Holly Springs Cowboys, Fidelity National Loans, Northcentral Electric, Lora Austin, Austin Services, Rust College, Community Temple Ministries, First United Methodist Church, First State Bank, Strickland and Woods LLC and American Pacific Inc. The media sponsors are WKRA 92.7 The Change, The South Reporter and WURC Radio 88.1 FM. The In-kind sponsors are The Apothecary, City of Holly Springs, and Marshall County Courthouse.

The Relay for Life movement is the world’s largest fund-raising event to help save lives from cancer. Uniting communities across the globe, the event celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and makes lifesaving change.

During Relay for Life events, members of each team take turns walking around the track or path. Teams participate in fund-raising year around. The event is a time to come together to celebrate loved ones who have won their battle with cancer and to remember those loved ones lost. Relay For Life brings the community together, embracing residents’ collective power to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer.

Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, provide free transportation and lodging to patients for treatment and fund cancer research that will help protect citizens today and future generations.

“Let’s bring hope to the ones who need it the most,” Wilson said.

The fund-raising for the 2022 season of the Marshall County Relay for Life teams has begun. If you would like to become a part of the 2022 Marshall County Relay for Life, please contact Felicia Jeffries at 662-707-1280 or Wilson at 601-731-4934.
