Pursuit ends in Slayden

Benton County Sheriff Robby Goolsby pursued a vehicle into Marshall County Monday.

It crashed, and four individuals were taken into custody with one charged, he said.

Benton County authorities got a call to the Curtis Road area where a person was reported standing in someone’s yard with a gun.

Goolsby was the first to arrive at the scene, he said, and four people jumped into a vehicle and attempted to flee. Deputy Robert Fortner, who was following Goolsby, tried to block the road but the driver went around his squad car and turned west onto Highway 72.

Goolsby said three males and one female were in the fleeing Saturn, and one of the males had been in a relationship with a woman next door to the house where the four were standing in the yard.

The chase began west of Highway 7 in the Lamar area.

Goolsby said the four had come back to get one of the subject’s vehicle when the incident developed.

The driver attempted to turn on North Slayden Road and lost control of the vehicle, which left the road, hit a tree and ditched. The tree then struck the sheriff’s squad car.

The four suspects were taken into custody while the Saturn caught grass afire and burned out.

Several officers with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and an officer with the Mississippi Highway Patrol assisted at the scene, and the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department responded to put out the fire.

Two of those in the car were juveniles, Goolsby said.

Herbert Hurt III, 18, of Rossville, Tenn., was charged with felony fleeing and aggravated assault on a law officer, Goolsby said.

No occupants of the vehicle nor Goolsby were injured in the incident.

“It all ended well,” he said.
