Police report more shootings

A suspect is charged with attempted murder after a shooting Sunday, Oct. 10, in Holly Springs.

Police chief Grant Glover said Lamarcus Jones, 18, of the Pinnacle Drive area of Southaven, was arrested by officers three days after the incident.

The shooting occurred in a neighborhood on Maury Street, he said. The suspect allegedly got out of his vehicle, shot at another vehicle, and then fled the scene. There were no injuries.

On Wednesday, Oct. 13, police received information that the suspect was a passenger in an automobile in Holly Springs.

“Officers observed the vehicle and made the stop in the parking lot of the shopping center on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive,” Glover said.

Jones was arrested without incident, he said.

As of Monday of this week, he was still in jail facing a bond of $500,000.

Another shooting occurred this past Saturday, Oct. 16, at 12:30 a.m. In the city. A teenager was injured, and police are looking for a person of interest.

The shooting took place in the parking lot of the convenience store, adjacent to the old laundromat, at 327 Martin Luther King Drive.

Glover said a 16-year-old male was shot and transported to Alliance Hospital and later released. He said the bullet struck him under his left armpit.

“It was a straight passthrough, hitting no bones or vital organs,” he said.

The police chief said authorities are looking for a person of interest, Alex Jamal Gross, 19, of the Edwards Street area in Sardis.

Glover said from looking at SkyCop video, there appeared to an ongoing argument that led to the shooting.

“There were approximately 20 teenagers there,” he said. “What are they doing out this time of night? I don’t have a clue.”

Update on previous shootings Additional suspects in shootings that took place in September recently turned themselves in to authorities. Chief Glover said Roy Vaughn Jr., 19, of the 400 block of Bicycle Road, Byhalia, turned himself in at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. Vaughn is charged with at-tempted murder in a shooting that happened September 10 on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the police chief said. He is out of jail on bond.

Malcom James, 24, of Tulip Cove, Byhalia, also turned himself in to law enforcement officials, Glover said. The suspect is charged with aggravated assault in a shooting that took place September 13 on Salem Avenue, according to the police chief.

Also charged with aggravated assault in that incident is Rodney Brown, 21, of West Park Street in Holly Springs, he said. Brown was arrested shortly after the September incident.

Both James and Brown are out of jail on bond.

Cassel Vaughn, 41, of West College Avenue in Holly Springs, also turned himself in to authorities, Glover said. He is charged with murder in a shooting on Spring Ridge Cove Tuesday, Sept. 14, according to the chief.

The victim, Tarnard Mosley, was gunned down at the doorway of his residence, Glover said.

Tony Johnson Jr., 21, of Ran-

dall Drive in Holly Springs, is also charged with murder in that case, Glover said. Johnson was arrested shortly after the September shooting.

Both C. Vaughn and Johnson are out of jail on bond.

Chief Glover said all the suspects in these cases had their original bonds reduced during initial appearances in court.

“They all have very restrictive stipulations with their bonds,” he said.

All the suspects in these shootings await action by the next grand jury, which is scheduled to convene in January 2022.

False pretense case

The Holly Springs Police Department is looking for a person of interest in a check fraud case.

Glover said Saturday, Oct. 9, a man attempted to cash a check belonging to Cooper Truck Line on Industrial Park Road.

“It was stolen from the business mailbox,” he said.

He said a cashier at Holly Market on Memphis Street suspected something was wrong concerning the $1,200 check and called police.

The person of interest walked out and was captured on surveillance camera. Glover identified the man that police officers are looking for as Robert Rucker, 41, from the Oxford area.

Glover said a female was in an automobile outside the business and arrested in the case. Samantha Lewis, 39, of the East Van Dorn area of Holly Springs, is charged with false pretense.

Anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of Rucker is urged to call police at 662-252-2122.

Police also found numerous checks inside the vehicle — all totaling about $20,000. They also seized three or four purses, numerous credit cards not belonging to the suspects, and material for making checks and/or removing information from checks. Some cash was also confiscated.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Chief Glover said.
