Police investigate report of gunshots

The Holly Springs Police Department is investigating an incident that took place around 9 p.m. May 29 regarding gun play in the area of East Van Dorn, South Chesterman and Coopwood Drive.

Chief Dwight Harris said shots were heard by multiple residents in these areas and reported to police.

An officer on routine patrol in the area responded and made one arrest.

The incident is considered a misdemeanor with the suspect charged with disorderly conduct, simple assault on a policeman and simple arrest, Harris said.

Apparently, the incident was due to the escalation of a threat.

Harris said there are many concerns the city’s law enforcement is dealing with, including the unlawful discharge of firearms in the city and burglaries.

“It is important to us to investigate all reports of all crimes and we investigate all reports,” he said.

Reports of shots fired are very sporadic and many times those involved in the incidents are not residents of the city, he said.

“We have great citizens here, and sometimes people who do not live here commit these crimes,” the chief said.

Three individuals, who are not residents of the city, are under investigation in the May 29 incident, he said.

“In every case, it is important for us to have the community share information to help make the city safe,” Harris said.
