One dead one injured in shooting

A verbal disagreement followed by a possible physical altercation took the life on one resident and injured the Monday afternoon, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

He said the incident took place around 1:40 p.m. At M&W Quick Stop at 1048 Highway 72, Lamar, near the Early Grove Road exit three miles east of Slayden.

It appeared the two men had words over one owing the other money, he said, where each man shot the other with handguns.

One man bled to death inside the door at the store, the sheriff said. The other was taken by ambulance in critical condition to the Regional One Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., because he was too heavy for transport via helicopter, he said.

Both men were local residents estimated to be in their mid-30s, Dickerson said.

The names of the subjects were being with held pending notification of next of kin and due to insufficient information, he said.

Two semi-automatic handguns were recovered at the scene and it appeared each victim could have been struck by one or more rounds.
