New road named Commerce Parkway

A new road to run behind Mid-South Ag, which has an entrance to Barringer Road, will be named Commerce Parkway, according to 911 director Stacy Reed.

Additional development is coming to the area, she said. It will be an 80,000 pound weight limit road.

The address of Mid-South Ag, just off Highway 302, will be changed to Mid-South Ag Drive, which is a frontage road to the business off Highway 302.

In a similar issue, Reed said McCormick is addressed off Highway 302 and was never changed to Gateway Global Drive.

Marshall County 911 wanted the new road (Commerce Parkway) named before building starts in the area because 911 addresses are assigned after construction begins.

The board of supervisors approved the measure.

Another change Reed brought up is a new postal service requirement that cluster mail boxes be built in new subdivisions.

Supervisor Keith Taylor said developers must leave a space for the cluster boxes, and there must be adequate safety considerations such as lighting and accessibility.

He said he is concerned with individual mail boxes set at drives in places where a person could be hit by traffic.

Zoning director Ken Jones said developers are now being advised they have to leave a spot in subdivisions for cluster mail boxes. No mail will be delivered by the postal service to driveways in subdivisions with over 10 houses, he said.

Board attorney Amanda Smith said she needs to look at postal service regulations.

“I just got regulations this week,” Jones said. “I was told there would be mail boxes up there that would not be delivered to (driveway mail boxes).”

Reed aired concerns that 911 addresses be visible at the entrance to drives in cases where no mail boxes on posts will be available. She wants the 911 address to be put at the entrance to the drive as well as affixed to the side of the house.

Jones said 911 addresses at the driveway is a safety issue for ambulances who need to see addresses at night.

District 5 supervisor Ronnie Joe Bennett said language should say that 911 addresses must be put at the driveway. In some cases the house is so far off the road, it is impossible to see the address affixed to the house from the road, he said.

In other business, the board of supervisors:

• opened bids for mowing grass on county properties. Bidders included Triple C Lawn Service, Barrett Ash Landscaping, Bowlin Lawn Service and George Perry. The board tabled the bids for later action.

• discussed holding an opening ceremony at the Marshall County Workforce Center in June. Northwest Mississippi Community College is already holding forklift and welding classes at the center, according to Justin Hall, executive director of Marshall County Industrial Development Authority. An invitation list was discussed.

• learned some county workers are not wearing their work uniforms and some uniforms are getting tattered. The board discussed getting new uniforms for employees.

• authorized a job fair requested by Fresh Start Facility Services to be held at the Victoria Community Center. Fresh Start is a commercial cleaning service provider.

• authorized the order of an asphalt paver.

• approved purchase of a four-wheel drive tractor for use at the fairgrounds.
