Murder suspect in custody

A suspect is in custody after a body was found shot to death in a vehicle Saturday morning near Byhalia.

Drenique Montgomery, 22, of the 4400 block of Seven Valley Cove, Memphis, Tenn., was arrested Sunday in Memphis, Tenn., on armed robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery charges unrelated to the homicide, according to Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

“Those charges were involving a previous incident that happened in Marshall County,” Dickerson said.

“As a result of our continuing investigation during the weekend, he was also questioned regarding the murder in Marshall County and an arrest warrant was issued Monday charging Montgomery with capital murder.

“Two other suspects are also being sought in regards to the murder case.”

Marshall County 911 advised the sheriff’s department about 9:30 a.m. Saturday that a person, possibly deceased, was in a vehicle at the end of Beechtree Cove, east of Warsaw.

“Deputies arrived moments later and observed a body, obviously deceased, partially positioned on the passenger seat and partially on the pavement,” Dickerson said.

“Officers observed what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the head and waist area of the victim.”

James Richard Anderson, county medical examiner, then arrived and pronounced the victim dead and assumed custody of the partiallyclothed body to begin arrangements of autopsy, the sheriff said.

Dickerson said he and investigators Kelly McMillen, Perry Pipkin and LaDaryl Odum, who were working the scene, were able to determine the body was that of Jordan Stewart, 25, of the 8600 block of Crestview Circle in Olive Branch. He had likely been shot the night before, according to authorities.

The vehicle containing the body was a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier, he said. It was towed to the sheriff’s department for forensic examination.

Continued investigation by Dickerson and his staff led to the arrest over the weekend.

The murder suspect, Montgomery, is in jail in Memphis at 201 Poplar, awaiting extradition back to Marshall County, Dickerson said.
