Man killed; suspect sought

A suspect is being sought in a shooting death on Highway 72 near the state line, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

The shooting took place near midnight Sunday as a man was washing a car. He was approached at the carwash and shot several times by another individual with a handgun, according to Dickerson.

The victim, Terrance Javon Hampton, 30, of Memphis Avenue near Mt. Pleasant, died on the scene, he said.

When sheriff’s investigators and deputies arrived, they secured the area and did a routine crime-scene work-up to collect evidence related to the case, the sheriff said.

Several spent casings were found at the scene.

As of 3 p.m. Monday, investigators had identified a person of interest, Dickerson said.

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call sheriff’s department investigators at 662-252-1311.
