Man dies in shooting; another injured

One man was pronounced dead on the scene of a shooting Saturday, and a second man was carried by a privatelyowned vehicle to the hospital in Olive Branch, according to Sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

Officers with the Marshall County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to the 500 block of French Road, in the Byhalia area, around 7 p.m., he said.

When investigators arrived on the scene, they found Robert Ellis, 56, of the Cayce Road address area, unresponsive, not breathing, and with multiple gunshot wounds, according to Maj. Kelly McMillen with investigations.

Marshall County Coroner James Richard Anderson pronounced Ellis dead on the scene. His body was in the middle of French Road, Anderson said.

A little later, investigators learned a second person was also shot and had been taken to Methodist Hospital, McMillen said.

He was later identified as Matrell Jones, 23, of the 500 block of French Road. Jones was treated for a gunshot wound to his right upper leg and later released, McMillen said.

Multiple shell casings belonging to different guns were collected at the scene of the shooting, Dickerson said. And two vehicles were towed to the sheriff's department to be processed for additional evidence pertaining to the shooting.

"This is a very active and ongoing investigation," Dickerson said. "We encourage anyone who has information regarding this incident to call us at 662-252-1311 and ask to speak with anyone in investigations"

Victoria Fire Department and CareMed No. 4702 from the Byhalia substation also responded to the scene.

In other news from the sheriff's department, Dickerson warned everyone to be aware of phone scams, and scams on social media asking for personal information regarding a person's banking account. Also beware of unsolicited calls from those warning people about their computers or Social Security, or any other such call. Do not give out personal information over the telephone or social media, the sheriff said.
