Man arrested in shootings

A 17-year-old man from Chulahoma Road is in jail charged with murder and attempted murder, according to Maj. Kelly McMillen with Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

Jamerion Laquez Powell, of the 800 block of Chulahoma Road, was arrested with assistance of agents with the Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force, U.S. Marshals, Sunday April 2 at about 10:30 p.m. at his residence, McMillen said.

The shooting took place April 1 at a horse show at the 300 block of O’dell Road while there were over 100 people present at the event, the Major said.

Jaquavin Tyson, 19, of Banks Road in Byhalia, was pronounced dead on the scene by coroner James Richard Anderson.

Quenicy Jenes, 20, of Cally Drive, Byhalia, was airlifted to

the Regional One Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., where he remained in critical condition Monday, according to McMillen.

Powell made an appearance in Marshall County Justice Court Monday afternoon where Judge Cathy Brittenum set April 17 at 9 a.m. for a preliminary hearing.

Prosecutor Shirley Byers recommended bond be set at $500,000 on a single count charge of attempted murder and bond at $1 million on one count charge of murder.

Byers recommended Powell be assigned a public defender until it is determined if Powell is able to obtain an attorney.

McMillen said law officers arrived at the scene Saturday night and found one man shot inside a car and the other victim was found lying outside the car with gunshot wounds.

An extensive search in between the 300 to 600 Block of O’dell Road is underway searching for the murder weapon, McMillen said.
