Justice court implements new rules

Justice court judge Ernest Cunningham, in a July 17 meeting, made the board of supervisors aware of new criminal rules and procedures that took effect July 1.

The Mississippi Supreme Court announced new uniform rules for county court and justice court in De­cember 2016. The rules would bring uniformity and transparency to criminal justice practice over the state.

The new rules will address every aspect of criminal proceedings, Cunningham said.

For the first time, a single set of uniform rules will apply to criminal procedures in justice, municipal, county and circuit courts. They address criminal proceedings from arrest through post-trial motions.
