HSHS 50th class reunion planned

The 1973 Class of Holly Springs High School is calling all classmates to register for the upcoming class reunion this fall.

The date and details are now being planned by the committee: Janice Jean Walker (662-544-0403); Alberta Payne Isabel (901-299-0977); Betty Jean Faulkner (901-489-0950): Camilla King Blossom (385-259-5363) and Gwendolyn Richmond Gipson (662274-4250).

Classmate Cathy Elliott Brittenum shared the class motto: Education makes a people easy to lead but difficult to drive; easy to govern but impossible to enslave – a quote from Henry Peter Brougham.

“I am looking forward to seeing all my remaining classmates,” she said. “Fifty years is a long time and to be here to celebrate such a momentous occasion is such a blessing.”

A number of classmates, including Brittenum’s brother Michael Elliott are deceased.

She said October 6 is the date set for the meet and greet. A black-tie event is set for October 7. A Praise and Workshop is set for October 8.

“As with all of our previous reunions, we will honor and pay homage to our principal, the late Joseph Ford,” Brittenum said. “We will also honor teachers and classmates who have passed on.”

Brittenum is putting together photographs from past reunions that she said she will present to her classmates.

The Class Valedictorian is Karen Mitchell. Levi McFadden is Class Salutatorian.

Classmate Harvey Payne said he is looking forward to the reunion.

“It is a golden opportunity for people to get moving again since COVID,” Payne said. “Come on back out.”

Payne said he played football. The late Russell Johnson was the football coach and Donald Ash coached basketball, he said.

Payne also attended Upward Bound at Mississippi Industrial College where he studied plumbing and electrical trades.

“It made a huge difference,” he said. “Most people who went to Upward Bound went on to get some college – a big thing.”

The deadline to register for the Class Reunion is August 31.

Call any of the numbers above to register for the reunion.

“Come and reminisce with the Class of 1973. Let’s celebrate, commemorate and enjoy,” wrote the planning committee.

Classmate Betty Jean Faulkner said she is looking forward to the reunion.

“I’ve been to all the class reunions we’ve had,” she said. “Everybody is excited. That’s why we are trying to get the word out.”

Registration for tickets for two is $150 for the weekend which includes all events.
