Holly Springs rocked by shooting

A Holly Springs man died of fatal gunshot wounds Friday evening around 9:45 p.m., according to Marshall County Coroner James Richard Anderson.

He said the shooting took place in the area of Henley Park at West Boundary Street and West College Avenue.

A 911 call about shots fired came in at about 9:05 p.m., he said. He responded to the scene with first responders with the Holly Springs Fire Department and no person was on the scene, he said.

But spent shell casings and blood was in the street, he said.

Later Anderson received a call from Alliance Hospital’s emergency room that a male subject with gunshot wounds, brought to the emergency room in a privatelyowned vehicle, had died.

Anderson said when he picked up the body to send to the state medical examiner’s office in Pearl for autopsy, he saw two wounds on the side of the subject’s abdomen and there was a lot of blood saturating the braids in the victim’s hair.

The coroner identified the deceased as 21-year-old Jaquavion Markell-Ball of Holly Springs.

He said officers with the Holly Springs Police Department were on the scene when he arrived and that officers with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department arrived shortly afterward.

Anderson said no one injured was at the scene when he arrived, but evidence of a shooting left at the scene were spent rounds and a pool of blood.

Holly Springs Police Chief Darryl Bowens said over 30 shell casings, possibly of 40 caliber, were found at the scene of the shooting.

Two persons of interest have been identified, he said.
