Fireworks set for Saturday

The Holly Springs mayor and board of aldermen joined hands to approve a pyrotechnic show set for the downtown square Saturday, July 1.

Showtime is 7 p.m. and fireworks is set for 9 p.m.

In discussions leading up to motions to approve payments for the fireworks and for entertainment, the board approved two motions.

Mayor Sharon Gipson said the cost of the fireworks from Pyro Shows Inc. is $12,700.

In the past, Contract Fabricators Inc. has paid for half the cost of fireworks.

“Are we still in partnership with CFI?” asked Ward 1 alderman Bernita Fountain.

“I do not know,” said Gipson.

“Is partnership still available?” Fountain asked, rephrasing her question.

Ward 2 alderman Andre Jones answered.

“I don’t think we executed any agreement that binds them,” he said. “But we did discuss it. I’m open to allocating the funds because it could be done in house (paid by the city).”

Fountain made a motion, Jones seconded, and the motion to support the show passed unanimously by the board.

Next, entertainment was discussed.

Gipson said DJ Kojack will host the show.

Ward 3 alderman Colter Teel, who has supported the July 4th fireworks event for the city saying it is his favorite event in town, asked the city to block off traffic in front of Booker Hardware and also on East College in front of Blues Alley. He asked if food vendors have shown interest.

Gipson said the same vendors are expected back this year. They must be licensed.

She said TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) has offered to pay for the entertainment. A local name group will perform. The price for entertainment is not to exceed $11,000, the mayor said.

Gipson recommended the board approve $7,000 to go toward the cost of the stage and entertainment.

Fountain made a motion for expenditure of city funds at $7,000 for entertainment, Jones seconded, and the motion passed by unanimous vote of all five aldermen.

Editors note: Monday Gipson said Contract Fabricators Inc. agreed to pay a portion of the cost of the fireworks.
