Deputy's son shot at Holly Market

The son of Marshall County deputy Bernita Fountain, Kendrick Fountain, was shot at Holly Market located at 130 North Memphis Street, Holly Springs, Monday morning.

His red car was parked at the gas pumps when a person he was talking with sitting in a grey car fired a weapon striking Fountain in the groin area near a major artery, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.

The incident was called in to 911 dispatch at 10:32 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13.

The driver of the grey car was inside Holly Market when the shooting took place, the sheriff said.

After the shooting, Fountain went inside Holly Market and collapsed on the floor, the sheriff said.

Fountain was airlifted to the Regional One Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Fountain is in his mid-twenties, the sheriff said.

A warrant was issued a suspect, Keith Hardaway, approximately 19 to 20 years of age. Hardaway was being sought while the driver of the grey car was taken in by Holly Springs Police officers for questioning, Dickerson said.

Deputies surrounded an apartment at Spring Gardens Apartments on West Woodward Avenue around noon seeking to communicate with Hardaway, who was thought to be barricaded in an apartment, Dickerson said.

The arrest warrant charges Hardaway with attempted murder, Dickerson said.

Investigators with the Marshall County Sheriff’s department and the Holly Springs Police Department are investigating the incident and collecting evidence which will be turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation that will handle the case, Dickerson said, because deputy Fountain works at the Sheriff’s Department.

Hardaway turned himself in to Dickerson at 11 a.m. Tuesday. He said Hardaway will make an initial appearance in justice court. If Hardaway does not make bond, he will be transferred to another facility, the sheriff said.

Assistant district attorneys with Ben Creekmore’s office were also on the scene after the shooting, the sheriff said.

The market has seen other shootings before. A June 4, 2023, shooting took place at 3:34 a.m. Where the victim was struck in the shoulder area and received medical care at Methodist Olive Branch Hospital.

A fatal shooting at Holly Market took place outside the store Dec. 16, 2022 at 1:44 a.m. The victim was identified as Darius Mitchell, 39 at the time, from the Shadow Lane area in Holly Springs.
