County plans Chickasaw substation
A substation for fire, ambulance and sheriff’s department is being planned for the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park.
Randy Mercer, with Marshall County buildings and grounds, said a two-story station of about 120 feet by 80 feet is being patterned after a substation in Ashland. The project will be done in house.
A motion by District 3 supervisor Keith Taylor to start the dirt work and slab passed the board.
Chancery clerk Chuck Thomas, who oversees management of building and grounds, said the county needs more labor in his department because of a large number of absentees.
“If you are going to add employees, this is the time to do it since next year is election year,” he said.
Taylor asked to search for a used road roller for paving.
“We need a steel wheel with water,” he said. “We can get equipment cheaper at government auction.” District 2 supervisor Eddie Dixon asked for a request for a traffic light at Highway 311 and Rossville Road on Highway 72.
He said he called the state Highway Department who said there were not enough accidents there to put a traffic light.
“One is too many,” Dixon said, making a motion to send a resolution asking for the state to put up a traffic light there.
District 1 supervisor Charles Terry asked for speed bumps at Grambling Road and Gaston Road saying it was like a drag strip there. The board approved the measure.
County administrator Tim Powell asked for bids for asphalt and monthly service bids.
Pay application #11 from Barnes and Brower for $276,641 for construction of the new jail was approved. The project has $3.5 million left in the budget to complete the job.
Lifeguard submitted a bill for $210,833 for five months covering an extra ambulance on the fleet. The cost is $50,000 a month, Powell said.
Ambulances are now assigned to Mt. Pleasant, Byhalia, Potts Camp and two are assigned to Holly Springs.
He recommended upgrading the back up generator at the 911 office replace the hose and belts and flush the engine. The maintenance can be done in house, quarterly, he said.
Zinn made a motion to reopen the county landfill off West Holly Springs Exit. The landfill was closed temporarily while safety measures were put in place to prevent falls at the roll-off dumpsters. The board approved a motion 4 to 1 to reopen the landfill. Taylor voted nay on the motion. Board attorney Amanda Whaley Smith reported that a contract with Flock for surveillance cameras is being developed.
Three petitions to lay out Mosby Road, Folsom Road and Lucas Estates Road are under consideration. Smith said all deeds are prepared to layout Folsom Road.
Grace Bonds reported to the board on renewal of employee health insurance coverage. She said there will be no increase in premium on the medical coverage this year.
