County OKs bids on road projects

Marshall County will get some road repairs completed this summer as bids were accepted on 31 miles of various county roads and then 4.1 miles on Wall Hill Road.

The projects were bid and all rejected because prices were over budget, then they were rebid.

Two bids were opened on the 31 miles of micro seal on sections of Galena, Chewalla, St. Paul, Clear Creek, Potts Camp, Strickland, Victoria, Taska, Mt. Zion and Cayce roads.

Bids on this project (SAP 4716S) were from Vance Brothers for $1,997,768 and from T.L. Wallace Construction for $2,193,921. Vance Brothers was awarded the bid. The state engineer’s estimate on the project was $1,457,444.

A bid from Kines and Stone of Booneville on SAP 4717S for 4.1 miles of repair work on Wall Hill Road in District 4 came to $370,151. Engineers’ estimates for this project was $238,242. The board voted to accept this bid. The project involves leveling spots in the road then applying chip seal. The road will get an application of micro seal later on when money becomes available.

Other construction projects underway include the Marshall County Workforce Center at Cayce Road and Wingo Road. An initial check for $150,000 to get this work started has been approved. And funds to build water, gas, sewer and an access road to the Cooper Tire construction site has been approved.

The county also approved additional funds from the Mississippi Development Authority amounting to $76,860 to build a water tank near Niagara Bottling. In order to get the funds, Niagara has agreed to a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) update committing to maintain 10 more jobs at the plant for two years. The county’s local match for this project will be paid by the Marshall County Water Association or Marshall County IDA.

County engineer Larry Britt notified supervisors that Local System Bridge Program funds have been approved for counties to repair bridges. Marshall County has one bridge (Tippah River) now closed for repairs and Lafayette County has four bridges closed.
