City honors retirees with plaques, photos
The City of Holly Springs launched its April 7 board meeting showing appreciation for a number of public servants.
Keith Freeman, with electric, water and gas retired with 24 years.
Reginald Burke retired with 25 years. Friends with his graduating class of 1990 surrounded him for a photo opportunity along with the mayor and aldermen.
Terry Sims retired with 32 years with water and sewer.
Michael Howell retired after 37 years, saying it is a pleasure to work for the City of Holly Springs. “Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to work,” he said.
The retirees represented 118 years of total service to the city.
Mayor Charles Terry thanked the retirees for service to the city and wished them a joyful retirement.
In construction work, Engineer Larry Britt reported the West Valley Avenue drainage project was completed and requested a change order of $7,261 for pipe and a final close out pay request from White Construction of $14,728.
Britt said the sign man got a purchase order and the marquee should be installed at the circle on Martin Luther King Drive and Highway 7 North in several weeks.
Ambassador Paulette Stewart, joined the meeting to report on Blue and Green Day that raises awareness of the work of the Mid-South Transplant Foundation. Mayor Terry presented Stewart with a resolution of support.
Stewart said there are about 100 individuals in the Mid-South on the organ transplant list.
The board walked rapidly through a number of action items on the agenda, including:
• authorized contract with Pyro Shows Inc. for the July 3 Independence Day Celebration. The amount of $14,595 will be paid in equal share by the City and Contract Fabricators Inc.
• approved payment of $3,826 to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
• approved payment of $5,225 to Double T Construction for snow removal during the ice storm.
• authorized payment of $180 to University Lock & Key.
• approved a quit claim deed in amount of $121 for Lot 97 and Lot 127 of Gaston Farms.
• authorized street closure April 17 around the square for a small parade following a wedding.
• approved street closure for May 2 Lessye Davis Parade.
• appointed Allegra Jones to position of Municipal Court Clerk.
• approved Floyd Green as a general laborer in Parks and Recreation.
• accepted resignation of Henry Bell as part-time police officer effective March 31.
• accepted resignation of Sgt. Johnny Glover.
• approved Johnathan Bownes as general laborer in Water/Wastewater Department.
• transferred Tanisha Lawrence to position of Customer Service Liaison.
• transferred Ivory Steward to position of Warehouse Supervisor.
• approved quotes from Donald Smith Company for $9,402 to replace Treatment Plant #1 meter head
• approved travel for DeJuan Wells to attend the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association (TVPPA) apprentice workshop in Jackson, Tenn.
• approved Michael Johnson to attend TVPPA pre-apprentice workshop in Jackson, Tenn.
• authorized Braylon Kettler to attend TVPPA Lab 1 in Murphreesboro, Tenn.
