Byhalia mayor resigns

Following an extended executive session of the Byhalia Board of Alderman February 15, Mayor Bill Dawson announced his resignation effective March 1.

Dawson, who took office on July 1, 2021, cited health issues for himself and his wife as his reason for stepping down.

A special election will be held to replace Dawson.

In other business the board approved a proclamation honoring Joe Carney, a prosecuting attorney who recently passed away.

The aldermen also discussed the ordinances necessary for transient vendors within the Byhalia town limits. The matter was tabled in order for attorney Adam Emerson to research similar ordinances in nearby towns that could be adapted to fit Byhalia’s situation.

Zack Wilson came before the board presenting questions regarding zoning issues that might limit the sale of cannabis within the town limits. The decision was tabled to allow the alderman time to gather more information.

Don Hollingsworth’s presentation to the board, requesting the purchase of an odorizer and a gas heater for a project at Chickasaw Trails/Wingo Road, was approved.

Alderman Kelly Crain posed questions concerning gas bonds that originated in 2017. His questioned were answered by Hollingsworth.

Police chief Ben Moore asked for and received permission to hire one part-time police officer Larry Britt, county engineer, presented information on the Community Development Block Grant project (bathrooms at the walking park). The project would move forward.

Park Kurtz Delta Properties donated approximately 2.0 acres to the Town of Byhalia to expand the ball fields.

The Byhalia Town Board meets the first and third Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. At Byhalia Town Hall. Meetings are open to the public.
