Bond set for murder suspect

A shooting in the 300 block of South Chesterman Street early Friday morning took the life of 20-year-old Derrick Johnson, according to Holly Springs interim police chief Darryl Bowens.

He said a man on foot shot into the passenger side window of the vehicle being driven by Johnson, striking him in the back of the head.

Johnson's vehicle came to rest after hitting a utility pole at the intersection of Moss Avenue and South Chesterman Street, he said.

A passenger in the car with Johnson was not hurt by several shots that entered the vehicle, Bowens said.

Following the shooting, the suspect, James Iman Mallett, 21, of the Chesterman Street area, went to a house and reported he was involved in a shooting, Bowens said.

The incident was caught on Sky Cop, he said.

The suspect was booked around 2 a.m. March 12 and is being held in the Marshall County jail.

Mallett's bond was later set at $1,050,000 on charges of murder and aggravated assault, Bowens said. A preliminary hearing will be scheduled for later this month.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Bowens.
