Board hires linemen, officers
The Holly Springs Mayor and Board of Aldermen attempted to fill vacancies in the Holly Springs Utility Department and Police Department at the Aug. 1 meeting.
Michael Allen, a graduate of Northwest Community College lineman training school, was approved as an apprentice lineman. He also has a commercial drivers license, which increases his skills as an entry-level apprentice lineman.
Action on hiring of Jeffery Hurt in the utility department and Roderick Jackson in the water division of the utility were held because they were not present at the board meeting when hiring came up.
Annie Mason, accounting manager at HSUD, recommended C&K Air and Heating to install an air conditioner atop the building at the Utility Department for a quote of $18,860. Other quotes, Octavis Bowen ($18,400) and Zinn’s Air Conditioning & Heat ($18,974), were rejected because the bids were old and/or and the companies did not come out and look at the job.
Alderman-at-large Dexter Shipp made motions to hire a number of police officers and a clerk and to approve officers for training.
He recommended Deidra Taylor, Devon McKnight, and Jaren King for travel to the police academy for training and the board approve his motion.
A motion by Shipp to hire Coya Jackson, a certified police officer at $16.50 an hour, was not acted upon because Jackson had to leave the meeting to go to work.
A motion to hire Marcus Nolan was also held because he had to leave the meeting.
Shipp’s motion to hire Detrick King, at $16.50 an hour, as a certified officer was unanimously approved.
Shipp made a motion to hire Alexus Turnage as an uncertified police officer, and David Colburn, as a noncertified officer, were both approved.
Janice Todd was hired as a part-time desk clerk to work the 7 p.m. - 7 a.m. Weekend shift at the police department was approved.
