Marshall County drivers have put up with these signs and barrels along with road construction for most of the summer, but some major projects have started to be completed, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Marshall County roadwork moves forward

Marshall County drivers will see long-term infrastructure overhauls and freshly finished safety upgrades take shape as state transportation officials press forward on tens of millions of dollars in highway work across the county.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced updates on three major local initiatives, highlighted by an ongoing $15 million project to replace five bridges along State Route 178.

Crews with Ste-Bil Grading Inc. are nearing the end of tree clearing along the Route 178 corridor. Workers have begun driving bridge pilings for Bridges B and C, while beams for Bridge A are slated to be placed by October. MDOT allotted 428 working days for the project, with completion expected in summer 2028.

Commuters traveling into neighboring DeSoto County will also see progress on bridge maintenance over Interstate 22 and U.S. Highway 78.

A $6 million repair project on the Craft and Miller roads bridges spanning the federal highways is underway. Contractors with Texas-based Gibson & Associates have finished concrete overlay work and are currently paving bridge ends and repairing structural supports. The agency expects work to wrap up in fall 2027.

Meanwhile, a major regional safety initiative on I-22 has crossed the finish line. Ste-Bil Grading Inc. completed the installation of median cable barriers along the interstate across Marshall and DeSoto counties under a $15.2 million contract, with final state inspections scheduled in the coming weeks.

The work forms part of a wider push across northern Mississippi that includes four-lane expansions, emergency structural repairs and paving contracts throughout the district.

“From the widening of State Route 7 to multiple bridge replacements, these projects will provide safer, more reliable routes, improve mobility, and support continued economic growth throughout the region,” MDOT Executive Director Brad White said.
