The
Holly Springs Fire Department is investigating a fire/explosion that
destroyed a house at 353 North West Boundary Street and resulted in two
injuries. Rodney Crane, assistant fire chief,
said the emergency call came in at 2:09 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, with the
first truck arriving on the scene at 2:11 p.m. Full Story
Stimulus funds to help county, Childers says By SUE WATSON Staff Writer With
the official signing of the $787 billion stimulus package passed by
Congress, U.S. Rep. Travis Childers toured District 1 last week to
explain how the package will affect Mississippians, particularly in the
areas of tax breaks and additional funds for education. Childers
said the vote for the bill was a tough decision for him due to the size
of the appropriation ($787 billion) and how the bill adds to an already

Group wants treatment center By SUE WATSON Staff Writer About
30 concerned citizens asked the Marshall County Board of Supervisors
February 17 to keep $2.1 million in state bond money slotted for
construction of an alcohol and drug treatment facility in the county. Pastor
Edward C. Moses of Asbury United Methodist Church, Pastor Willie
Jeffries with Strawberry MB Church and Calvin James were spokespersons

Committee, petitioners push for swimming pool By BARRY BURLESON Editor A group of citizens was back before the Holly Springs mayor and board of aldermen last week requesting a swimming pool. Spokesperson Al Beck presented city leaders with a written summary and also talked about the need for the facility. The swimming pool committee had previously submitted a petition containing more than 500 signatures in support. Full Story

the February meeting of the Leadership Marshall class Thursday, members
discussed and set priorities for service projects, heard book reports
and were introduced to Fish Philosophy. The
class met at the Collins-Hurdle VFW Post 5697, provided rent-free by
the VFW. Sonic provided breakfast and A2Z Sign & Print Shoppe

Cities joining Cultural Corners Pontotoc,
Rolling Fork, Aberdeen, Port Gibson and Bay St. Louis are designated as
this year’s additions to the Certified Cultural Corners program, grants
designated to towns with a population of less than 20,000 to preserve

Holly Springs police respond to burglaries Holly
Springs police officers responded to three burglary reports for the
week ending February 23, according to chief Robert Pearson. A
business in the 500 block of J.M. Ash Drive was burglarized Tuesday,
Feb. 17. Someone broke into the snack machine in the break room and
took approximately $50 in coins, Pearson said. Full Story

Byhalia policemen go to 23 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 23 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 6; motor
vehicle accidents, 1; thefts, 1; escorts, 1; medical assistance, 3;
fires, 1; miscellaneous calls, 8; trespassing, 1; damaged property, 1. Byhalia police officers also made nine arrests during the past week.
