Man enters guilty plea in 2011 shooting By SUE WATSON A shooting incident almost two years ago, that left one man dead and another injured, has been resolved in Marshall County Circuit Court. It happened April 25, 2011, in the parking lot outside the Bearcat Sports Bar at Holly Inn on Highway 178. The defendant, Jeremy McGauyhey, 35, of the Marshall County area, pled guilty before Circuit Court Judge Andrew Howorth last week and was sentenced Tuesday.
Robbery try fails By SUE WATSON Family Dollar on West College Avenue in Holly Springs was hit with an attempted robbery Monday, February 18, at about 7 p.m., according to police chief William Hollowell. He said a man with a BB gun asked a store clerk for money and the clerk dialed 911. There were two officers, a policeman and a sheriff’s deputy, in the vicinity and they were on the scene within a minute or less. The subject is believed to have fled to the rear of the store when he noticed police vehicles in the parking area.
Main Street Chamber proposes movie night By SUE WATSON An ambitious Holly Springs Main Street Chamber hopes to add a new event this year for Thursday nights. Shanette Folsom, executive director of the Chamber, requested support from the City of Holly Springs to kick off Movies, Magnolias and More on April 11, to run for five weeks in the Spring Hollow Park. Busbys revive historic mansion By SUE WATSON Gena and Frank Busby are living their life’s dream. It started when they bought The Magnolias in Holly Springs, built in 1852, so they could cut off some commuting time from Ashland. Murder suspect held without bond By SUE WATSON One suspect has been charged with murder in the death of Patrick Antonio Jones, whose body was found stuffed inside a garbage container December 5, 2012. Jones had been missing for several days when his sister reported him missing to the Marshall County 911. City police officers respond to 129 calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 129 calls last week, according to chief William Hollowell. The calls included – disturbances, 11; alarms, 16; larcenies, 3; accidents, 8; funeral escorts, 3; burglaries, 1; domestics, 9; agency assists, 8; checks on homebound, 3; 911 hang-ups, 1; shots fired, 2; robberies, 1; assaults, 2; and 61 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher responded to six calls. Byhalia police respond to 37 calls, make nine arrests The Byhalia Police Department responded to 37 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 2; miscellaneous, 17; escorts, 6; juveniles, 2; thefts, 1; motor vehicle accidents, 1; medical, 8; and harrassment, 1. Byhalia police officers also made nine arrests last week Civil War parapets near old bridge not in danger By SUE WATSON Eight parapets, once used for Union cannons near the Tallahatchie River on Highway 7 South, will not be endangered by the construction of a new bridge. Archeologist John Underwood, with the Mississippi Department of Transportation, recently visited the site of the eight parapets that are located off Old Oxford Road. He assured local Civil War buffs the historic structures will not be harmed. |
