| Board revisiting issue with haulers By SUE WATSON Staff Writer While
the Legislature is considering raising the weight limits for haulers
from 84,000 pounds to 88,000, the Marshall County Board of Supervisors
is considering either taking haulers who have damaged roads to court
for compensation and/or requiring haulers to post bond before going

Longtime city leader dies at 84 Memorial
services for former Holly Springs Utility Department general manager
Thomas Boone Jr. were held Monday at Holly Springs Funeral Home. Boone
died Valentine’s Day and was 84. He was born and
reared in Holly Springs, youngest son of the late Catherine and Thomas
Boone Sr. He played football at Holly Springs High School and at Hinds
Junior College before serving as a flight trainer in World War II. Full Story

Fire razes house By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Five
fire departments responded to a fire at 278 South Red Banks Road
Thursday at 4:34 p.m. The house was a total loss, according to Tracy
Jeffries, fire investigator with the Marshall County Sheriff’s
Department. Jeffries said Kevin Clements had
come home from work, put some food in the oven and was resting when he
was awakened by the lights and television going off. He went outside to
check the breaker box after the lights went out and when he reentered
the house it was full of smoke, he said. Full Story
TVA says customers can expect savings TVA announces a second consecutive decrease in its quarterly fuel cost adjustment for billing periods beginning April 1. Because
the fuel cost adjustment is a per kilowatt-hour charge, amounts that
consumers will save depend on the amount of energy they use. While
savings will vary across the Tennessee Valley, residential consumers
can expect a decrease that ranges from about $4 to $9 in their monthly
power bills. Retail billing periods for TVA power distributors also
vary, so some April bills will include March usage at the lower rate. Full Story
Leadership program in place at Byhalia By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Students
in the fifth through eighth grades at Byhalia Middle School are
clamoring to be nominated for a new leadership program started last
year at the school. The group is named T.R.I.B.E. Leadership Council, which stands for Teaching Responsibility and Ingegrity By Example. The
Tribe is a community service group and the Leadership Council is chosen
among students in that group who show leadership potential, said Kerry
Reid, principal at the middle school. Full Story
Police respond to burglaries Holly Springs
police officers investigated several reports of burglary and an auto
theft for the week ending February 17, according to chief Robert
Pearson. A 1995 dark green Infiniti 130 was
reported stolen from the 100 block of West Woodward on Tuesday, Feb.
10. The vehicle’s owner said it was last seen Monday, Feb. 9, around 11
p.m. Tuesday morning he awoke and noticed the car missing. Full Story
Byhalia police go to 28 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 28 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 6; motor
vehicle accidents, 4; disturbances, 1; thefts, 1; escorts, 2;
animal-related calls, 1; juvenile-related calls, 1; assists, 1; medical
assistance, 3; fires, 1; miscellaneous calls, 7. Byhalia police officers also made seven arrests during the past week.
Childers announces open house Congressman
Travis Childers will hold an open house at the Hernando District Office
on Thursday, Feb. 19, for residents of DeSoto, Marshall, Panola, Tate,
and additional surrounding counties. Constituents
will have the opportunity to talk with the congressman and members of
his staff, including Ella Jean Whalen, field representative in the
Hernando office. The open house is scheduled from
4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The office is located on the east side of courthouse
square, 2564 Hwy. 51 S., Hernando.
One dies in accident By BARRY BURLESON Editor A Massachusetts woman was killed early Sunday morning in an accident on Highway 72 in Marshall County. Coroner
James Richard Anderson and Sgt. Leslie White with the Mississippi
Highway Patrol said Renee J. Poirier, 22, of Lunenburg, Mass., was
driving a 1994 Lexus eastbound that left the highway and struck a tree.
Anderson said she was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at
the scene. The accident happened 100 yards west
of Lake Hill Road, a few miles from the Tennessee line, at about 3:49
a.m. The accident remains under investigation.

Mayor Andre’ DeBerry, alderman Russell Johnson and city clerk Belinda
McDonald recently attended the Mississippi Municipal League’s 2009

members for outstanding service during its Black History Month

Construction
of West Boundary Extended is underway in Holly Springs with water and
sewer lines and dirt and bridge work. U.S. Construction is doing the
water, sewer, dirt moving and bridges on the project while Union
Construction is building the box culverts, according to public works
director Don Hollingsworth. West Boundary will tie into Crescent Meadow
Drive on the south end at the Holly Springs Commons area and will tie
in at Highway 7 South beside KFC/Taco Bell. Other construction is
underway on another project sponsored by Frank Swords LLC, with Neil
Bain Construction doing the dirt work. The large commercial development
is located on the north side of U.S. 78 and west of Williams Clinic and
the prospective site for a new hospital in the development area. |
