‘Lucky’ rescued from open cistern By SUE WATSON Staff Writer | Photo by Sue Watson | Rescue work

Members
of the Holly Springs Fire Department recently came to the rescue of a
canine friend given the nickname “Lucky,” after the dog was spotted in
an underground cistern by Jan Woodgate. The
cistern was open slightly to the outside of the porch and Woodgate said
she had been looking at the house as a possible purchase. She
discovered the exposed cistern and was concerned a child or animal
could fall into it. “I happened to come by and
found the hole two days ago when talking to the realtor,” she said. “I
mentioned it could be a hazard to a child or a dog, so I came by and
looked and sure enough!” The pet was found Friday morning, Feb. 1. City animal control officer Lacey Brown helped with the rescue work. Pointing, he said the dog has been getting out regularly from the fenced-in back yard two houses to the north. “I’ve been chasing him and chasing,” he said, exasperated. “I’ve seen him out several times.” The
pet did not seem to be injured and did not fight rescue workers who put
the pet in a harness before lifting the dog to safety.
