Humane Society seeks grant renewal By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Carmen
Marlin and Sherri Janssen with the Marshall County Humane Society
appeared before the board of supervisors last week to ask their support
for a Mississippi Car Tag Grant. A governing body has to act as a fiduciary for the grant, they said, but no funds are requested from supervisors. The Humane Society used $2,800 in the 2007 grant to fund the spay/neuter clinic, they said. “We used the money to help 93 families with the cost of 157 surgeries on dogs and cats,” Marlin said. She
said the neutering program reduces the stray dog and cat population and
that the Humane Society exceeded its goals last year of 150
spay/neuterings by 4 percent, Marlin said. This
grant, if funded, would be spent to help animal lovers who need
assistance with spay/neuterings, vaccinations and medicines to treat
canine and feline diseases, she said. “It’s much
more effective to try to stop unwanted litters than to pick up strays
off the road and try to find shelter for them,” she said. Chances
of getting funding this year may not be good, Marlin said, as the
agency tries to spread the funds to as many organizations over the
state as it can. In its last application for the
grant, the county board of supervisors provided a letter to be enclosed
in the application and the chancery clerk’s office disbursed the grant
money. Patrons can support the grants by buying
the “I care for animals” car tag. A portion of the fee for the tag goes
to a fund to support animal health concerns. The Mississippi Board of Animal Health handles the grant process for the state through its animal fund.
