City school district wants land swap/referendum By SUE WATSON
The Holly Springs School District has proposed to build a new intermediate school on property near the primary school on Maury Street. The deal would involve a land swap between the city and the school district and construction of a new school, according to superintendent of education Irene Walton Turnage.
Board amends firearm, leash laws By SUE WATSON Marshall County supervisors last week discussed and approved amendments to ordinances concerning the discharge of firearms in subdivisions and leash laws. Board attorney Kent Smith led the discussion, with a number of interested residents in the boardroom. Man beaten; suspects arrested By SUE WATSON Two Benton County residents and a Union County resident were arrested last week after a Marshall County man was beaten with a baseball bat and robbed, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. He said officers were called to investigate an incident that took place Thursday, Feb. 7, at a location near the old Byhalia racetrack on Rabbit Ridge Road. Officers talked to the victim, who had been beaten about the head and face with a baseball bat and robbed. The victim identified one of the suspects, a Benton County woman, before he was taken to the hospital for treatment, the sheriff said. Byhalia celebrates Arbor Day By SUE WATSON Members of the Byhalia Garden Club and the Bluejays Junior Garden Club of Byhalia Middle School gathered Friday with elected officials to celebrate Arbor Day at the Byhalia Sports Association ball fields. It was another overcast, cold and windy day as the clubs remembered the founding of Arbor Day and the importance to plant trees. The ball field needs shade for hot summer days, said garden club president Jan Sisk. Supervisors weigh in on legislative issues By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Board of Supervisors is increasingly uneasy about legislative bills in Jackson that pile on more millage requirements for local governments. The issues involve education, homestead exemption, Section 42 housing tax breaks for developers, Medicaid expansion and more. Correction Two mistakes were found in a story in the February 7 issue of The South Reporter concerning the Healthy Hearts Food Pantry. Bertha Thomas’ first name was incorrectly stated. Volunteer Helen Newsom is also the director of the Isaac Chapel Community Center. The South Reporter apologizes for the errors and is glad to make the clarification. Holly Springs police respond to trespassing, burglary, more Holly Springs police officers responded to 93 calls last week, according to chief William Hollowell. The calls included – disturbances, 7; alarms, 11; larcenies, 7; accidents, 5; funeral escorts, 4; burglaries, 2; domestics, 4; assists to agencies, 2; checks on homebound, 1; assaults, 1; malicious mischief, 1; 911 hang-ups, 3; and 45 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher answered 7 calls. |
