City OKs gas project, utility program By SUE
WATSON The Holly Springs Board of Aldermen accepted the bid of Eubanks Construction to extend natural gas to about 360 new customers in the Red Banks Road and Humphreys Road areas. The board passed resolutions for bonds to pay for the project.

WATSON Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday was celebrated January 21 in Holly Springs by remembering the life and contributions the slain civil rights leader made in the American struggle for equality. Bro. Bennie Braswell, minister of the Hernando Road Church of Christ, was keynote speaker for this year’s annual breakfast. WATSON A proposed 10 cents a gallon gasoline tax increase in Jackson drew county boardroom discussion recently. The conversation followed the report by supervisor George Zinn III, who attended the mid-winter conference for supervisors recently in Jackson. Full StoryHomestead signup ongoing By SUE WATSON Landowners have until April 1 to sign up for Homestead Exemption for the 2013 tax year, according to tax assessor Juanita Dillard. The signup period runs from January through March, but April 1 is the last day to apply for homestead this year. Alcorn group visits Hiram Revels’ burial site Alcorn State president Christopher Brown II and a bus full of college students visited Hill Crest Cemetery in January. A wreath was placed on the grave of Hiram Revels, the first black U.S. senator and founding president of the college. WATSON A Marshall County Sheriff’s Department patrolling deputy was memorialized Tuesday after succumbing to a heart attack Friday. The sheriff’s department formed a processional from the justice complex to the Bethlehem community where David Scott Johnson was honored by the law enforcement community and friends and family, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. Byhalia Chamber – ‘It takes all of us’ By SUE WATSON A large crowd showed up for the recent Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon, ready for a great catfish meal and lots of camaraderie and networking. Sarah Sawyer, executive director, said Seafood Junction Too always fills up for the annual quarterly luncheon at its facility. City police officers respond to 73 calls Holly Springs police officers responded to 73 calls last week, according to chief William Hollowell. The calls included – disturbances, 6; alarms, 9; larcenies, 5; accidents, 5; funeral escorts, 4; burglaries, 1; malicious mischief, 1; checks on homebound, 1; auto burglaries, 1; and 40 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher responded to five calls.
