Election next Tuesday for state representative
A special election will be held next Tuesday, Nov. 5, for state representative, District 5. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
District 5 includes most of Marshall County and a portion of northwestern Benton County.
Seven candidates are seeking the position, which became open when former representative Kelvin Buck was sworn in as mayor of Holly Springs July 1. For a sample ballot, see page 14.
Absentee voting is available in the Marshall County Circuit Clerk’s office for the special election.
Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also, the circuit clerk’s office will be open this Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon for absentee voting. The deadline to vote absentee is Saturday, Nov. 2, at 12 noon.
Absentee voting is available for registered voters in the district who will be unable to go to the official polling station on the day of the election.
If no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast next Tuesday, then a runoff election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
Founders’ Weekend slated for Nov. 8-10
Rust College is hosting its 147th Founders’ Weekend November 8-10.
Activities include the Alumni and Friends Awards Banquet, coronation of Miss Rust College, the Founders’ Parade, homecoming basketball game and Founders’ Breakfast.
The parade is Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. The 147th Founders Convocation will be held Sunday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. in Morehouse Auditorium.
Entry deadline Nov. 29 for Christmas parade
The annual Holly Jolly Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, in downtown Holly Springs.
The parade is sponsored by the Holly Springs Main Street Chamber. Line-up starts at 3 p.m. at the Old Colonial parking area on East Van Dorn Avenue. Judging begins at 4 p.m. The parade starts at 5 p.m.
All entries must be received by November 29. Pick up an entry form at the Holly Springs Main Street Chamber and Holly Springs Tourism offices at 148 East College Avenue.
Ward 2 meeting set for Nov. 7 at city hall
Alderman Sharon Gipson announces a Ward 2 community meeting. It will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. at Holly Springs City Hall.
