Absentee voting begins for state representative
Absentee voting is underway in the Marshall County Circuit Clerk’s office for the District 5 state representative election.
Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also, the circuit clerk’s office will be open the next two Saturdays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon for absentee voting.
The deadline to vote absentee is Saturday, Nov. 2, at 12 noon.
Absentee voting is available for registered voters in the district who will be unable to go to the official polling station on the day of the election.
The special election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 5. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
If no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast, then a runoff election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
District 5 includes most of Marshall County and a portion of northwestern Benton County.
Seven candidates are seeking the position, which became open when former representative Kelvin Buck was sworn in as mayor of Holly Springs on July 1.
Chamber luncheon Thursday in Byhalia
The fourth quarter Membership Luncheon Meeting of the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Networking and business displays begin at 11 a.m.
The location will be at the Northcentral EPA Community Building at 225 Highway 309 in Byhalia.
The meeting is sponsored by volunteers of “Hearts & Hands Ministries.” Dr. Amy Woods of the Byhalia Family Health Clinic and president of the Hearts & Hands board will be the keynote speaker.
The fee is $5 per member with reservations. All others are $10 each.
Founders’ Weekend slated for Nov. 8-10
Rust College is hosting its 147th Founders’ Weekend November 8-10.
Activities include the Alumni and Friends Awards Banquet, coronation of Miss Rust College, the Founders’ Parade, homecoming basketball game, the Founders’ Breakfast, a memorial service and a convocation.
The parade is Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m.
The 147th Founders Convocation, with guest speaker Anita Ward Richardson, will be held Sunday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. in the Morehouse Auditorium of the Doxey Alumni Fine Arts-Communication Center.
