Close to Nowhere
Joining the crowd
I’m going to join the crowd and jump on the bandwagon — and talk about the football weekend!
I am not going to even pretend I know anything about football. I do know about socializing.
And, if nothing else, tailgating in The Grove is social! Then, there’s “social media.”
I, personally, didn’t go to The Grove for the game. I’m not insane, yet.
My youngest brother Danny and I went to Home Depot and Walmart during the game. And no, I’m still not insane. During the game, Oxford, unless you are at the stadium and in The Grove, is a dead place.
Very few people were at Home Depot. By the time we got through at Walmart it was close to 3 p.m. and I was getting kinda antsy. I did not plan to be in Oxford as the game was letting out! I am not insane!
Meredith, my oldest granddaughter, and a bunch of friends, were in Oxford at The Grove and surrounding area. They didn’t go to the game — didn’t have tickets, but almost everyone in The Grove had the game on their phones, etc.
And I have to say, I’m really enjoying telling Mere “I told you so.” I told and told her not to wear heels. Even stacked heels are heels and at a game on the Ole Miss campus, you’re gonna be walking a lot.
She and said friends walked from Walmart to The Grove. Then they walked everywhere else.
One of her heels broke and she has complained all week about her blistered feet and sore legs.
I told her not to wear heels! I told her!
I realize that tailgating at The Grove requires dressing up and heels, etc. (I heard that the tent closest to the ESPN tent was a big white thing with a chandelier and china and fine silverwere and white linen tablecloths, etc.)
I was pretty happy not to be at The Grove and even as a Memphis Tiger fan I was pleased that Ole Miss and State won. My Tigers beat Cincinnati 41-14, by the way.
It’s been fun being a Mississippian this week. It’s nice for “fun” things to be all over the national news about us.
My favorite comment of the entire weekend was Friday night at JB’s karaoke. A group of Alabama fans came in to, what was for this Friday night, a den of Ole Miss Rebels.
After a particularly loud, boisterous “Roll Tide,” and similar friendly comments from all the Rebels, one of the Tide fans said quietly, “And thanks for not killing us.”
Made my night and my weekend!
