County engineer clarifies recent story on mailboxes A story about mailboxes that ran in the September 11 (Number 37) issue of The South Reporter is being clarified by county engineer Larry Britt. “You can have a brick mailbox, but it has to meet regulations,” he said. “The construction of brick mailboxes (or of any type of mailbox construction that does not meet federal requirements) would have to be behind a clear zone, the width of which varies from road to road due to several factors, and this puts them too far off the road and therefore they would not meet the requirement of the U.S. Post Office for delivery of mail. “In other words, the clear zone is too far away from the edge of the road to meet the U.S. Post Office requirements and beyond the clear zone is the only location that mailboxes made of brick or other material not approved by Federal requirements can be placed. Brick mailboxes located inside the clear zone must be removed and no new ones can be placed there.”
