Byhalia sweeps Tigers on road for district wins
By BARRY BURLESON
Long road trips paid off Friday night for Byhalia basketball teams.
They went on a two-hour bus ride to Winona and swept a pair of Region 3-3A contests.
The Lady Indians were dominant. They beat the Lady Tigers 71-26.
“We are beginning to play as a team,” said coach Reginald Jones, whose Byhalia squad went to 7-10 overall and more importantly 4-1 in the district.
The Lady Indians were on fire from the start. They took a 29-8 lead after one quarter and were up 52-15 at the half.
Leading scorers were Shandricka Sessom with 20, Kimberly Reed with 15 and Arkeisha Beard with 14.
Sessom got in foul trouble early.
“Many of the other girls got a chance to play,” Jones said. “Other girls stepped up and played well.”
The nightcap in Winona was close early but not in the end. The Indians tomahawked the Tigers 75-52.
“We were down 10-0 early and then led by 10 at the half,” coach Todd Hutchinson said. “We played OK – not great.
“They (Winona) lost five seniors last year, so they’re young like us, but ours played a lot last year. It was a good team effort on our part.”
The Indians upped their marks to 9-13 overall and 3-2 in the division. Ironically, the three district wins have come on the road and the two losses at home.
Byhalia squads traveled to North Panola Tuesday. They host Charleston Friday night and then welcome M.S. Palmer Thursday of next week, Jan. 31, in a contest rescheduled due to last week’s icy weather.
