Close to Nowhere
• Daughter Dana and I went to Jackson last week to the Greater Jackson Quilt Guild show at the Mississippi Craft Center in Ridgeland.
Just off the Natchez Trace, the Craft Center is a very modern-looking building that houses crafts of every imaginable kind.
We’ve been there several times before and have always enjoyed it. I can never decide which of the gazillion things there either on exhibit or for sale fascinates me most.
Aside from the quilts this time, there were a couple of gorgeous, handmade banjos propped up in the entrance to the shopping gallery.
I’ve been a member of the Mississippi Quilt Guild for a number of years now and have attended several quilt workshops and seminars, so I “know” quilters from all over the state.
It was really nice to see the actual people and teachers and to be able to look as closely as possible at all the stunning quilts on display.
It was really hot in the building, so after examining all the quilts and buying something from every vendor there (that, to me, is an essential part of every quilt show!) we slipped out and drove to the Mississippi Science Museum. That’s one of our favorite places to visit in Jackson, and this time, they had a display on reptiles. Dana loves snakes, etc. and while I’m not quite that fond of them, it was a fascinating exhibit.
When we got home, naturally I went straight to Facebook and there were many of the quilts I’d seen that morning with the faces that belonged to the quilters. I was so happy to see a face and a name I knew with their quilts.
It’s weird; I’ve been quilting about 10 years now and it’s gone from something I wanted to try to a complete obsession.
I guess all hobbies/crafts do that?
• I’m happy to report that Gloria Jones, nurse at Dr. Hawkins’ office, did not kill me for spilling the beans about her 60th birthday.
I went by the office Friday afternoon to wish her a Happy Birthday and drop off a lap quilt. I don’t know about anyone else, but I love lap quilts. I have them all over my house so I’m never without something to cover my cold feet up.
