claim district crown
The District 1-A softball race this season was no contest.
The Marshall Academy Lady Patriots outscored their district opponents 117-8 and finished 10-0.
The latest came Thursday at home, a 10-1 win over DeSoto School.
Darcie Gibson pitched the complete five-inning game, giving up only two hits and recording nine strikeouts.
She also led the Lady Pats at the plate, going two for two with a walk.
Adding one hit each to wrap up district play for the season were Maura Jane Autry, Hailey McMinn and Bailey Easley.
On Monday of last week at home, the Lady Patriots trounced district foe West Memphis 33-1 in a doubleheader – 14-0 in game one and 19-1 in game two.
Gibson pitched the first perfect game of her career in the first of two three-inning games. The no-hitter included seven strikeouts and no walks.
In game two of the twinbill, Alexis McGreger got the win from the pitcher’s circle. She gave up only one hit, struck out six and issued one walk.
Autry carried the hot bat during the doubleheader. She was six for six.
Other top hitters in the two games September 8 were McGreger, five for six; Hannah Pasco, three for four; and Sarah Jackson, three for three.
On Tuesday of last week, as a favor to Tunica Academy, the Marshall softball squad agreed to go play the Lady Blue Devils in a scrimmage game since their “Senior Night” was rained out.
“We worked on a lot of situations, starting out with runners on base, just to practice different things in getting ready for the playoffs,” coach Carlton Gibson said.
“We saw some things defensively that we need to work on before the playoffs start.
“Offensively, we looked good.”
Autry pitched the scrimmage game and “did a good job,” he said.
The Lady Patriots (18-6) hosted Magnolia Heights Monday of this week and visited Hebron Tuesday to wrap up the regular season.
The North Class A Tournament will be held Saturday and Monday, Sept. 20 and 22, at Carroll Academy.
The State Class A Tournament follows Saturday and Monday, September 27 and 29, at Shiloh Park in Brandon.
