Public speaks out about high taxes

They represent a cross section of the business district - bankers, realtors, builders, store owners, homeowners, educators.

Respectfully, those who chose to speak at the Marshall County Board of Supervisors felt government should tighten its belt rather than increase taxes. Some felt the school district’s request for an increase of 3.5 percent of last year’s budget is justified based on the need to educate youth.

The public hearing Monday drew a full boardroom with some standing.

City seeks grant for Ida Wells Museum

The Holly Springs Board of Aldermen approved a request last week from curator Leona Harris to make a second round of renovations at the Ida B. Wells Museum.

The purpose of the museum is “to inspire and enrich the lives of Mississippians and people everywhere by sharing the history and culture of African Americans,” she said.

Bob Sargent of the Hummer/Bird Study Group gives guests the opportunity to see and touch a hummingbird. The Hummingbird Migration Celebration last weekend at Strawberry Plains Audubon Center saw record attendance – with approximately 9,000 nature enthusiasts enjoying the 10th annual event. The Holly Springs Fire Department came to the rescue on Sunday.

While fire departments are sometimes called to rescue stranded cats in trees, this time it was a bird that needed help.

Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation (MWR) is an annual participant in the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center’s Hummingbird Migration Festival and displays a variety of birds of prey that are used in their education programs. On Sunday MWR was showing a new education bird, a small bird of prey known as a Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis), when it accidentally escaped from its handler’s hand. The bird flew across the lawn to a large hickory tree and was perched approximately 75 feet high. Unfortunately the bird was wearing leather straps and a short leash when it took off. After a few minutes, the bird flew to another nearby tree, going even higher. This time the bird’s leash became tangled on the tree limb making it impossible for the bird to fly anywhere.

Police make arrests, investigate burglaries

The Holly Springs Police Department made two arrests last week and reported three burglaries and one grand larceny, according to chief Robert Pearson.

Exhibit Day

The annual Exhibit Day for the Marshall County Extension Office’s Homemakers Club was held recently on the courthouse lawn in Holly Springs. Members brought fresh fruits (muscadines, pears) and vegetables (tomatoes, peas, beans, peppers, squash), home-made clothing, potted house plants, aprons and quilts, and lots of preserved fruits and vegetables. The traditional fried pies, cobblers, pound cakes, and chocolate cakes were also in abundance. (Left photo) Pattie Sharp and Gloria Gipson bring pies.
