Close to Nowhere
Happy 60th, Gloria!
When we first moved here in 1986, one of the many new things was our new doctor. Dr. Hammack was practicing just across the street from the newspaper office. Not only did I like him, but he was very convenient.
He had a different nurse then, Tammy, and I was a little apprehensive when she left and a new nurse came on board. I’d just gotten used to the old one.
Gloria Jones turned out to be so nice and so gracious and so patient with all Dr. Hammack’s patients. It wasn’t long at all before I was quite comfortable with her.
Dr. Hammack retired several years ago and after a couple doctors sliding in and out, Dr. Hawkins has settled in and become “our” doctor. And through it all, Gloria has been right there.
When I take Pop to specialists or when he’s in the hospital, other nurses have to get tired of hearing about Gloria.
“Gloria doesn’t hurt when she sticks me.” “Gloria doesn’t leave a bruise.” “Gloria is better at...”
Gloria has become a lot more than a nurse to our family. She is someone we can depend on and turn to. She offers encouragement and consolation and tons of good advice.
She laughs a lot when we’re talking also. She and I often run into each other around town and I find it hard to finish whatever I was doing -- I’d much rather stay and talk to Gloria.
We have a lot in common -- children, family, tastes, etc. And we have very close birthdays.
I’m going to get in trouble for this part. As I admitted on my birthday, I was 60 on August 12. Gloria will be 60 this Friday, on September 13.
I guess Friday the 13th is as good as any day can be for her to kill me.
We were talking at Walmart not long ago and she said that we didn’t look or act 60 so there wasn’t a reason in the world for anyone to know that we were 60. I said 39 was a good year that I’ve used many times and we agreed that we were 39 instead of the dreaded “60.”
If you know Gloria, go by Dr. Hawkins’ office Friday and wish her a Happy 60th Birthday! Maybe if she’s flooded with happy birthday wishes she’ll forget that she wants to kill me!
